Sankeien Garden

Sankeien Garden is a traditional and typical Japanese-style garden which surface extends to 175000㎡, designed and landscaped by Sankei Hara, a wealthy businessman in the silk trade in May 1906 (Meiji 39). He reconstructed buildings of historic importance from places such as Kyoto and Kamakura, the seventeen old buildings of high historic value that are skillfully arranged in harmony with the seasonal changes of the natural scenery is a must see (10 of them are designated as “Important Cultural Property” and 3 as “Yokohama’s Tangible Cultural Property”)

While Sankei Hara was alive he supported and trained new different artists, whose some of their creations were born at the garden, such as Seison Maeda’s 「Dynamic Procession of a float Shrine」, Taikan Yokoyama’s「In the shade of willows」and Kanzan Shimomura’s 「Yoroboshi」between others early modern Japanese-style painters.

“WAON”

An after regular operating hours night event will be held for 19 days during the Rugby World Cup 2019 at「Sankeien Garden」one of the National designated spot of Scenic Beauty where you can experience real Japanese culture in Yokohama.
Taking in consideration that Sankeien Garden Founder 「Sankei Hara」supported and trained artists in this town, different promising suitable artists will be doing various performances using the Important Cultural Property “Main Hall of Former Tomyoji Temple” as a stage.
From dusk you will be able to enjoy Sankeien garden main hallmark the “Three Storied Pagoda of Former Tomyoji Temple” as well as its surroundings lighted up scenery.
Furthermore, the free shuttle bus from Sakuragicho station to Sankeien Garden will be running at special exclusive hours accordingly to the events.

* The body of the shuttle bus is green and is labeled “To Sankeien Garden”.

* First come first serve maximum of 28 people per route (including the extra foldable seats )

Access by bus or train

  1. 1From Negishi Station
    At Bus Platform No.1, take the municipal bus Route No.58,99 or 101.
    Get off at Honmoku (10 minutes' ride), and then walk to the Garden (10 minutes).
  2. 2From Yokohama Station, Sakuragicho Station or Motomachi China Town station
    At Bus Platform No.2, take the municipal bus Route No.8 or 148.
    Get off at Sankeien-iriguchi (35 minutes ride), and then walk to the Garden (5 minutes).

    At Bus Platform No.2, take the Burari-Sankeien Bus (Operates only on Saturdays and holidays/45 minutes ride.) Get off at the end of line (Sankeien Garden).
    Burari-Sankeien Bus is not available from Motomachi-China town station

* Only the main gate will be open after regular hours
